Non-destructive testing (NDT) is a wide group of analysis techniques used in science and technology industry to evaluate the properties of a material, component or system without causing damage.

NDT is applicable at all stages:Manufacturing, Processing-before releasing to customer and In-Service periodic Inspection (after handing over to customer).


All the parts including Gears, Brake liners, Brake shoes, Chassis, and other casting bodies etc will be tested for their fitness for use.

Ex : Maruti limited, Bajaj auto, Hero motors, Hyundai, Ford, Kia motors, etc and their suppliers.

Common Methods in NDT

Visual Testing

  • Advantages: Economic and easy to implement
  • Limitations: Only surface flaws visible with naked eye or magnification tools

Liquid Penetrant Testing

  • Object cleaned
  • A liquid is applied to the surface of the part
  • Time given for liquid to seep into surface flaws.
  • The excess liquid is removed from the surface of the part.
  • A developer (powder) is applied to pull the trapped penetrant out the defect and spread it on the surface where it can be seen.
  • Visual indication of flaw seen
  • Advantages:Simple, Economic and no heavy equipment
  • Limitations: Only surface flaw detection possible

Magnetic Particle Testing

  • The part is magnetized.
  • Fine iron particles are then applied to the specimen.
  • These particles are attracted to flaws
  • They form an indication directly over the discontinuity.
  • Advantages: Flaws below 6 mm deep from surface also can be detected
  • Limitations: Applicable only on ferromagnetic materials



Radiography Testing

  • The part is placed between the radiation source and a piece of film.
  • Radiation allowed to pass through the part
  • The part will stop some of the radiation.
  • The film darkness (density) variations will give indications of flaw.
  • Advantages: Internal flaw detection possible
  • Limitations: Radiation hazards

Ultrasonic Testing

  • High frequency sound waves are introduced into a material
  • They are reflected back from surfaces or flaws.
  • Reflected sound energy is displayed versus travel time
  • Visualize a cross section of the specimen showing the depth of features that reflect sound.
  • Advantages: Flaw location known, internal flaw detection
  • Limitations: Internal composition, shape of object

About NDT Certification

  • Level I:- Qualified to perform specific calibrations, specific NDT, specific evaluations, and record results. Should receive Specific instruction or supervision from a NDT Level II or III.
  • Level II:-Qualified to set up and calibrate equipment, Interpret and evaluate results as per applicable Codes, standard and specifications. Should be familiar with technique limitations. Organize and report the results.-on-the-job training and guidance of trainees and Level I personnel.
  • Level III:-Qualified to develop, qualify and approve procedures, establish techniques, Interpreting codes and standards. Should have sufficient practical background in applicable materials. Should be capable of training and examining Level I and II

  • How to get NDT LEVEL-1 or 2 certified?
    Those people meeting the mandatory requirements of any of the above certification bodies as below:

  • The training program shall be well organized and well-structured for specific method in theory and practical sessions.
  • After successful completion of training, examination shall be conducted.
  • Upon successful qualification in each method, NDT LEVEL-2 certification shall be issued by NDT LEVEL-3.
  • One can get this certification in the basic methods like Magnetic Particle Inspection, Liquid Penetrant Testing, Radiography Testing, Visual Testing, and Ultrasonic Testing.
  • The level 2 certification is the first step to proceed with. This will only help an aspirant to be an NDT Technician or an NDE Inspector (basically technician).
  • Try to get into any company as an NDT Technician. The job as an NDT Technician is hard, low paid HENCE For an engineer, it’s not worth to be a technician for too long so try to gain field experience in the NDT techniques within 1 year.
  • With an ASNT Level 2, one might be working as a skilled technician in the field, but a qualification to ASNT Level III takes him/her to higher managerial positions.
  • The more the number of methods qualified, better are the opportunities.

  • Certified Associate Welding Inspector, Certified Welding Inspector, Senior Certified Welding Inspector.
  • Get certified as a Welding Inspector from any of the above societies.
  • It doesn’t matter from which one as both are equally valuable certifications.
  • By this time one will have an idea on how to proceed with career.
  • Meanwhile gaining experience in NDT will help to fulfil the requirements of NDT Level 3.

    This is the general type of programme conducted for any module.
    PLAN-A—Certificate of participation will be given to the participant and is applicable for all modules.
    Duration and syllabus depending on mutually agreed terms.

  • PLAN-B- Certificate of competency will be issued to the successful participant (who was qualified in an examination in theory and practicals as per specific training document/customer written practice) and is applicable for NON DESTRUCTIVE TESTING module only.

  • TYPE-B-Classroom training at customer’s premises-ONSITE
    This type of programme shall be conducted for any module and for any plan and is strictly restricted for minimum registered batch strength for each module.
